Thank you-Come again!

On February 28th someone abandoned this beautiful baby girl in a cab in Queens, New York. The cab driver immediately took her to a firehouse which had been designated as a "safe have. Numerous states have adopted "safe haven" policies as a way to ensure that unwanted infants are left safely. In Michigan for example, you can leave a baby at a fire station, hospital or police station with no questions asked. If the baby is left safely and is unharmed criminal charges are not filed. In the Queens are there are approximately 450 places designated as "safe havens". I'm not sure which is more disturbing: that someone abandoned this beautiful baby in a cab or that Baby Safe Haven is actually working on a partnership with 7-11. Yes, the party store. This would allow people to leave their baby 24 hours a day with a 7-11 clerk. Have any of you ever seen the movie Clerks? Have any of you ever been in a 7-11? Do I need to say more?

  1. Something must have been terribly wrong because I can't understand how someone could just leave her either. It's a good thing there are these safe havens.

  2. I always tell my best friend from high school when they shut down a cat lady, and need homes for her cats. She groans at me.
So, are you fixing to adopt this one?
Zoe, step away from the baby.

  3. Just this past week, in my city, somebody left a baby girl on the "door step" of a hospital. The problem is that it was 20 degrees outside and the baby girl died. People are so whacked! If they'd have carried her inside, she'd be okay and somebody who desperately wants a baby would have a daughter. These kinds of things just kill me.

  4. And secondly, this girl is gorgeous. Just imagine the thrill the adoptive parents are going to have in the next few weeks! For them, it is a beautiful day!

Um, yeah... leaving a kid at a 7-11? I won't even leave my CAR unattended at a 7-11!

  6. I would sooooooo have to agree. How hideous to think of someone actually doing that. But even worse is the selfish assholes who leave their babies in trash cans or try and kill them. There are so many people who would die to have a babies, it's just ridiculous.

  7. I guess I'd rather someone leave a baby at a 7-11 than have the baby die. I would think they would call some one to pick the baby up asap.

  8. Where I'm from 7/11's are perfectly decent convenient stores; they are not known as "party stores". In the state I was in we had separate liquor stores. Sure they sell beer and cigarettes, but also all the other "conveniences" of newspapers, snacks, lotto tickets and other random necessities.

I'd much rather a desperate parent have the option of leaving their infant at a 7/11 which is always attended, with people coming in and out at all hours, than leave them to freeze to death or be found days later in a dumpster...

Even Dante from Clerks would have the brains (and the don't-leave-me-alone-with-this-thing-fear!!) to call the authorities IMMEDIATELY if they were to acquire a baby on their premises.

I say the more safe places the better.

  9. A 7-11?!?!? Really? I didn't know that one. I wish more people would just leave the baby someplace safe, anywhere there are people. I am just amazed that the things people do.

  10. It floors me that people can become so scared that they cannot think of the child that they are about to cause harm to when they abandon them.

  11. She's lovely, I'd take her in a heartbeat. Maybe I should get a hold of those Safe Haven people...

  12. I guess a 7-11 is better than a trash can, or some other worse fate. It does sadden me that people can abandon their babies, but if they are able to do that, then what kind of parent would they be anyway? The safe-haven program has saved so many. I was just thinking the other night of a terrible story that happened to an 18 month old in my state not that long ago. I wish I could take in all these kids and show them what love truly is, I can only pray that someone, somewhere will show them they deserve better and that being abused is not ok. Thanks for sharing the story Zoe, this beautiful baby will surely find loving parents and thank God she is safe now.

  13. I just stumbled by thanks to an email link from my sister. I agree that it's terrible that some women are so desperate and afraid that they feel all they can do is get rid of their babies, and I'm so thankful that society finally caught up and came up with ways to try to keep babies safe when it happens.

But 7-11! My husband manages a 7-11. I find the mental image of him receiving a baby rather amusing. I'm afraid he'd try to bring it home and keep it, rather like the cat that came home from work one day (that my sister adopted, thank-her-very-much; I already have three kids, three BIG dogs and three cats; I'm full-up).

And some of his employees are, well, not especially bright. There's one girl in particular that alarms me with her own children. YIKES!

  15. I think I've found my new career. 7-11 clerk babysitter.

  16. Well . . . I figure a 7-11 clerk (even like the ones in Clerks) is probably better than anybody whose parent would abandon the baby with the clerk, right?

By the way, it appears as though the baby is not a newborn . . . that strikes me as odd because it seems to me that usually when that happens it's a newborn. Though that doesn't make it right.

Random thought: Why don't they make onesies for adults? I swear I can't stand how my shirt keeps riding up.

  17. Come again? (no pun intended). ;0) 7-11's? Are you kidding me?!? Wow. Thats pathetic. I've never heard about the 7-11 option. How the hell many babies are abandoned that they need to open the doors to a freakin' 7-11 as a "safe haven?" Hell, I don't even go into a 7-11. That's so sad...I hope that beautiful little girl find a loving home. Thanks for sharing, Zoe! :0)

  18. That is so sad. Scary about 7-11 being a safe haven. Why not more police stations, hospitals? I would feel weird walking up to a 7-11 person and saying, "Pack of Camels oh and here take my kid." Thanks!

  20. In the UK there were safe havens in the 1800's but not anymore. I don't want to think about how many stories I've read about babies in dumpsters or plastic bags. Even with haven laws you still get idiots who would rather kill their babies . If I could I'd adopt them all I would .

  21. Better a 7-11 than a dumpster.

At least mothers do have the option to do the right thing for their babies if they cannot take care of them.

  22. Oh that little girl. So adorable. I can't believe anyone could give up a baby. I guess they were really in dire straits. I am still shocked though there are 450 places to drop them off there.
